Norman joined the TA, where he learned to drive the big wagons and the tanks. This was to come in handy one day, when out on a Rolls-Royce Christmas party with girlfriend Val, and best mate Barry. A coach was organised to go to the Raven at Market Drayton. However, the coach driver was suffering the effects of a bad cold, and some kind samaritan gave him plenty of medicinal brandy, which turned him comatose. When the party was over, Barry and Norman were left with the decision as to who would drive, and Norman with his TA experience, volunteered. All the passengers were dropped off at their homes and even the bus driver was left in a shop doorway to sleep it off. The coach returned to the Crossville and a good night was had by all.
