The Day You Died

I had a phone call early Wednesday morning, it was Mum at the hospital, and you were already dead. I drove too quickly, and Karen had already got there first. We waited in A & E relatives room, which was a depressing place. Mum was in pieces. You had been bleeding extensively, and they wouldn't let mum be with you during your last minutes. We thought you would slip off quietly with lots of drugs in a peaceful death, but you had other ideas. It was very traumatic. We were asked if we wanted to see you, and were taken into the recovery area. You looked so peaceful, still yourself. I had put off saying the things that people say, thinking there was plenty of time, and there wasn't. You weren't ready to die, and we weren't ready to let you, so what went wrong ! Mum regrets telling you off the night before for not eating your tea and wasting food. If only we had known. I can't honestly remember what we did that day, I remember speaking to the police and filling in lots of paperwork, but I can't think what else we did, we were in shock.
